British taxpayers face an £850 billion interest bill over the next six years as the country’s debt pile reaches record levels. £123.9 billion will be spent on interest payments this year alone, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The OBR’s report highlights the growing cost of servicing the national debt, which currently stands at £3 trillion. By 2031-32, this figure is projected to reach nearly £3.7 trillion, with interest payments totaling £160 billion in that year.

Soaring Interest Payments Impact Public Services

The surge in interest payments is putting pressure on public finances, leaving less money available for essential services like defense and health. This has forced the Chancellor to implement tax increases, including on banks, bookies, savers, and buy-to-let landlords.

The freeze on income tax thresholds, introduced as a pandemic measure in 2022, has also been maintained. This means that more people are being pulled into higher tax brackets, reducing their take-home pay and impacting their standard of living.

Global Factors Drive Up Borrowing Costs

Global borrowing costs have risen sharply due to the US-Iran war and the resulting spike in oil and gas prices. The UK has been particularly affected, with concerns about the government’s spending plans and willingness to borrow more.

This is close to the 19-year high of 5.5% reached earlier this month.

Matthew Amis, investment director at Aberdeen, noted that the Chancellor has managed to reassure bond investors for now, but warned that 2027 will present another fiscal challenge.

Debt Pile Grows Tenfold Since 2000

The UK’s debt pile has grown more than tenfold since the turn of the century, when it stood at £350 billion. The OBR’s report shows that the debt interest bill will total £854 billion between this year and 2031-32, £70 billion more than previously anticipated.

As the government grapples with the challenge of reducing borrowing and managing debt interest payments, taxpayers will continue to feel the impact through higher taxes and reduced public services.
