Most retirees use online pension services

Over 50% of adults between the ages of 55 and 70 utilize their pension provider’s website for major choices regarding their retirement, based on findings from Aptia. The administration firm questioned 500 participants in that age bracket, 50% of whom were already retired and collecting a pension, while the other half were exploring their options.
When preparing to access their funds, nearly 30% of retired participants utilized their provider’s site or app, whereas 50% of those near retirement intended to do the same. Additionally, more than half of the 55-to-59 age group intended to rely on digital tools.
The study also indicated that 25% of retirees looked for details via social media or other sites, including the government’s MoneyHelper and Pension Wise.
Sue Doughty, Aptia’s UK head of pensions administration, stated: “The choices people make at retirement can have a major effect on their financial health over time, which is why it is positive to see individuals actively looking for advice as they get ready for this stage.
“Those retiring soon place more importance on digital planning tools, though Aptia’s data suggests there is no single solution that fits everyone. When members cannot reach the assistance they require, they are more likely to go to unregulated sources like social media. For this reason, trustees ought to assess the help they offer and consider providing both a robust digital experience and access to expert guidance.”
The research revealed that only 16% of individuals approaching retirement intended to speak with a professional financial advisor. This aligns with earlier studies showing a surge in the use of AI tools to find pension advice.
Simultaneously, the communications firm Quietroom has cautioned that many AI replies regarding particular pension schemes are deceptive and frequently draw from unrelated plan websites. Quietroom discovered that these tools frequently struggle to connect with scheme websites to obtain accurate data, yet they still produce an answer without alerting the user that they failed to access the correct source.
