Ukraine is deploying tower-mounted heavy machine guns equipped with artificial intelligence and computer vision to defend Kyiv and surrounding areas from drone strikes, including those carrying explosives. The system, already in use on the battlefield, has proven effective against both conventional and high-speed Shahed drones, according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat.

Speaking during a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz this weekend, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the plans. Ihnat, who initially doubted the technology’s effectiveness, now acknowledges its success. “The range is limited because we’re using machine guns,” he said, but the AI-driven targeting has improved Ukraine’s ability to counter drone attacks.

Kyiv remains a primary target for Russian drone strikes. In September alone, Russia launched 6,438 drones, with 5,575—86%—shot down by Ukrainian forces, according to military data. The shift reflects a broader escalation: drone usage has risen compared to summer, and Russia has introduced rapid modifications to evade defenses. Earlier in the year, attacks relied heavily on cheap Shahed drones and Banzerol and Dan-T loitering munitions, though exact figures for ballistic missile strikes remain classified.

The AI-powered gun systems, deployed in Kyiv’s outskirts, mark a shift from manual tracking. Ukrainian forces now destroy 50-60% of high-speed drones, up from near-zero effectiveness before the technology’s rollout. Conventional drones, however, remain easier to intercept, with destruction rates nearing 90%.

Russia’s Fuel Supply Under Attack

Meanwhile, Moscow faced its own drone onslaught. On October 6, city mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported 650 drones targeting the region, with 105 shot down before reaching Moscow’s borders. Satellite imagery confirmed a fire at Volodarskaya Linear Production-Dispatch Station, a key fuel distribution hub near Konstantinovo village, owned by state-owned Transneft. The facility handles 3 million tons of fuel annually, including aviation supplies for Moscow’s airports.

This is the second such attack in October. Earlier this month, Ukrainian drones struck a similar station in Samara region, disrupting fuel logistics. The strikes align with Ukraine’s “logistical lockdown” campaign, which has targeted supply routes to occupied Crimea. Satellite images show damage to the Chonhar Bridge, a critical link to the peninsula, following repeated drone strikes since spring.

Ukraine’s Hornet drones, guided via Starlink terminals, have forced Russia to reroute convoys along the A-280 highway, now dubbed “R-280 Novorossiya”, but attacks persist. The instability has crippled Crimea’s summer tourism season, with disrupted fuel and supply chains.

Ukraine’s drone campaign extends beyond logistics. On October 5, 118 combat engagements were recorded, including 16 attacks near Pokrovsk and 15 near Kostyantynivka. Russian forces also conducted 57 airstrikes, dropping 185 bombs and firing 1,700 artillery rounds, alongside 6,000 FPV drones.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Ukraine on Sunday, reinforcing Western support amid escalating drone warfare on both fronts. Zelenskyy also announced progress in procuring F-16 missiles, critical for countering drone threats, with deliveries already underway from global suppliers. Negotiations with Poland, the Netherlands, and France have secured funding for expanded production of Ukraine’s own Bars anti-drone system, which has a 30% interception rate when used in coordination with Germany.

Production of Drone Defense Systems Accelerates

Global suppliers are already shipping F-16 missiles to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy announced this progress during his address marking the 1685th day of the full-scale war. Ukraine is purchasing these munitions from around the world. He emphasized that these weapons are vital for the air defense strategy. The arrival of these missiles supports the broader effort to protect cities and critical infrastructure from aerial threats.

Escalating Drone Campaigns and Diplomatic Tensions

Three drones sank a Turkish cargo ship carrying corn from Ukraine to Italy. The vessel, crewed by Azerbaijanis and Indians, was hit near Izmail. Eleven people were evacuated, though the captain and one crew member died.
